It’s all about Recovery

January 9, 2012

normatecfront1.jpg

Having been in the track and field business for many years and being a seasoned thrower I’ve learned that sports is about recovery.  If you want to preform at your best you have to be able to recover.  A key factor for my longevity in discus throwing has been focusing on recovery.  In looking up the definition of recovery I found, 1. The act, process, duration, or an instance of recovering.  2. A return to a normal condition.  3. Something gained or restored in recovering.

Like a fine wine, I like getting better with age!  And that has been possible by trying to find ways to recover better every year.  In college I started with Sleep, making sure I was getting a good night’s rest.  Then I learned about Icing and putting ice on a sore muscle after a workout.  I spent one whole summer doing yoga to maitain Flexibility. After competing in 3 Olympic games and working on number four, I’ve stepped up my recovery game.

Some things I do daily to help my body train at this level.  Staying Hydrated, I drink a gallon of water a day and I like to treat myself to an occasional coconut water.  Nutrition I continue to make dietary changes every year, but since focsuing on whole foods, organic foods and eating seasonal I feel way better than when I ate fastfood all the time.  A focused Warmup and Cool down, making sure I am ready to go before training and stretching really well after.  I used to get in the car and go straight home, talk about stiff, not anymore.  I’ve added in more Sports Massage over the years, I try to get treatment once or twice a week now.  My newest addition this year has been the NormaTec MVP system I first learned about it at World Championships and then I got to use it again at the Pan Am Games.  My legs and arms felt so much better that when I got home, I got a set.

The definition says to return to a normal condition, I want a Better Condition!!  #makeitcount  London 2012

Pumpkin Pacth 2011

October 9, 2011

ppfront1.jpg

A great time was had by all at the Jack O Lantern Lane pumpkin patch this weekend.  This was our second time to the farm and it was even more fun than last year.  Two of Theo’s friends from school and thier families joined us.  They had a huge play area with bouncy houses and a giant bouncy slide.  Theo’s favorite was the Thomas the train ride which he rode twice.  Then we took a wagon ride out to the pumpkin fields and played “I Spy” along the way.  It took some convincing but I finally got Theo to get a decent sized pumpkin.  We had a lot of fun in the petting zoo, holding baby rabbits, petting horses, cows and feeding baby goats.  We learned how to shuck corn, grind it and turn it into meal.  After all the hard work Theo had homemade ice cream with his friends Magnus and Hudson.  Just to show how much fun he had he even slept with his pumpkin last night.

Water???

September 3, 2011

water1.jpg

During my years being involved in athletics I have been taught that it is important to stay hydrated.  I remember my 1st Olympic team in 1996 seeing signs on the wall in the training room if your pee is this color drink more, and I remember laughing, thinking why do you care about the color of my pee? Until recently I didn’t really pay attention to what it meant to be hydrated and how to know if I was properly hydrated.  In my quest to be healthier, which has been several years of making dietary changes. Now, I am taking a closer look at WATER.  This blog is going to be the 1st of many on the topic of water. Below I have a couple of links, one to watch a 1 hour documentary and another for their official website.  I encourage you to watch the movie and then comment on this blog and let me know what changes you are going to make for a healthier you and planet.

I am no longer going to buy bottled drinks in a plastic container.  I will be more diligent about using my reusable bottle and for travel I have a stainless steel bottle with a filter in it.

USA’s and More…

July 16, 2011

usa2011b1.jpg This is a 4 meet recap that starts with our USA outdoor Championships, held in Eugene, OR.  This years championship determined who will be in Daegu, Korea this summer for the World Championships.  We had a great crowd the whole weekend and I was surrounded by lots of friends and family.  My loudest supporter was of course my son.  He loves coming to USA’s every year, he gets to see our whole training group compete and cheer for all of us. The women’s discus was on the 1st day, June 23rd, and we have 5 women with the World “A” but only 3 of us can go.  I knew it would be a tough fight for a spot on the team.  I finished 2nd with a throw of 62.87 meters, the other team members are Stephanie Brown-Trafton and Gia Lewis-Smallwood. Visit here for full results I returned home from USA’s on June 27th to leave for Lausanne, Swizterland on June 28th, just enough time to repack.  As all the athletes were arriving in Switzerland you could see how tired the Americans were from having had our championships the week before.  But like the professionals that we are we pulled ourselves through.  With that much travel in my system, I made sure I warmed up really well before they took us onto the field.  I take my 1st throw of the comp and I’m standing there looking out to the field and watching the board waiting for a measurement, and in my mind thinking that felt like a pretty good throw.  I watch the replay of my throw on the big screen and it seems like the mark is taking forever to come up and then it does, 63.85 meters a Seasons Best THROW!  I finished 2nd and earned some more diamond league points. Visit here for results  Video results here My plan was to return home to the US on July 1st but my manager says we have another meet in France on July 5th and Birmingham, England on July 10th then go home.  So I get to hang out in the Netherlands for a few days and get some good training in before Reims, France. The nice part was I was there with other athletes from my managers group.  Then I get to Reims and a new wave of US athletes were there so it was fun to catch up and a chance to congratulate many on making the US team.  The meet went well I finished 3rd with a throw of 62.11 meters I was 2 cm out of 2nd. Visit here for full results The next day I traveled to Birmingham, England.  I was excited knowing this was my last stop before going home.  So I did the happy dance all week.  I walked around the city a little bit and checked out some of the historical sites, not to much because of the rain.  I got rained out twice in one of my practices.  It reminded me of being back in Seattle, I know some of you can relate to that, Huh?  We lucked out for the meet with only drizzle during the women’s discus.  I threw 62.65 meters for 2nd and some more Diamond league points.  With 2 more diamond league meets to go, I am in a 3 way tie for 1st with 6 points.  Up next Monaco on July 22nd and the final meet in Brussels on September 16th. Happy 4th Birthday Theo!

June 5, 2011

bday41.jpg We celebrated Theo’s 4th birthday today and fun was had by all.  He has been excited about this party for months.  Something happens around this age and parties become a big deal.  He wanted cupcakes with blue frosting, track and field, and peanut butter and jelly sandwiches.  I can’t figure out how he came up with the idea of a track and field party, LOL!  So that’s what we had, the kids did Long Jump, High Jump, Shot Put and a short sprint race, and for 4 year olds they were pretty good.  They all won medals for each event and they finished the day with lots of gold around there necks.  Oh and for entertainment they got to jump in a Tiger Belly bouncy house, what’s better than jumping on a tigers tummy?  I wanted to say a special THANK YOU for everyone who came, you really made his day and thanks to everyone who helped me set up and clean up, we couldn’t have pulled it off with out you. Happy Birthday Theo!!   Mommy Loves You!!! theos4bday1.jpgtheos41.jpg theos42.jpg theos43.jpg theos44.jpg theos45.jpg theos46.jpg theos47.jpg theos48.jpg theos49.jpg bday41.jpg

In Good Company in 2010

January 18, 2011

2010throwsfront1.jpg If someone ask you which events the USA dominates in track and field what would be your response?  Most say sprints, hurdles and maybe relays.  I’m not sure why the depth of our field events goes unnoticed.  So I would like to take this opportunity to brag about our USA throwers, men and women, with a fun statistic which ranks the best countries for throwing published by all-athletics.  I am very proud to be part of this group of Elite Throwers!  USA Men #1 and USA Women #2!!!!

USA and Germany defended their first positions in the men’s and women’s Countries Throwing Rankings respectively.

Like last year, Germany is in second in the men’s ranking and Poland kept its third rank. Belarus improved from sixth to fourth and they are in number one position in men’s Hammer Throw.

USA is the unrivalled leader in Shot Put with a huge margin. The ranking of the men’s Discus Throw could not be any closer; one point between the first (Germany) and second (USA) and Estonia in third is just one point behind Germany.

Finland proved again that Javelin Throw is traditionally a Finnish event.

Germany represents a different class in women’s throwing. They are number one in three of the four events.

Cuba kept its leading position in Discus Throw, but they dropped from second to fifth in overall since last year. USA took the second position and China moved up to third.

Dangers of Hydrogenated Oil

December 8, 2010

fatfront1.jpg Last year I blogged about the dangers of plastics and which numbers are safe.  I spend a lot of time researching nutrition and how I can have a healthier lifestyle.  I have made a lot of dietary changes in the last year.  One of which I feel it’s time to talk about and that’s the hydrogenated or partially hydrogenated oils.  I have rid my pantry of products that contain them and I would hope you will do the same.  I am going to include some helpful links and videos at the bottom of the message that go into the scientific detail about the dangers. I have to admit I do get teased a lot about my OCD label reading.  I feel very comfortable when I am at home and know what’s in my food and how it’s being prepared.  It’s very challenging to travel now and find food I would approve of on the road, especially in restaurants.  But as I have more conversations with all of the people around me I realize that the dangers of hydrogenated oils are not common knowledge.  Please read the information below, watch the video and do your own searches, so you to can cut this KILLER out of your life. momgoinggreen.wordpress.com  www.learninggymusa.com  www.becomehealthynow.com www.brighthub.com Video www.icyou.com

Las Vegas 2010

September 14, 2010

las-vegas1.jpgMy season just ended about a week ago so some down time was needed.  I had to spend a few days in Las Vegas on business so we worked in a family vacation.   We spent an afternoon pool side at the Mirage.  Theo had a blast, he has a new swim suit that has the built in life vest so he can just jump in swim.  I think we covered every inch of the pool which included swimming under the bridge and waterfall several times, Theo’s 2 favorite spots.  We watched the Volcano erupt at the Mirgae, which was hot an beautiful.  There is a tram that runs between the Mirage and Treasure Island which Theo loved, he thinks trains are coolest, especially Thomas.  And at Treasure Island they have a pirate show, which is really cool.  Theo got to sit on top of his dads shoulders so he had the best view.    After the Pirate show Theo, his dad, great grandmother and I went to dinner and had some of the best food. The coolest thing we saw, the Secret Gadren and Dolphin habitat.  You get to be up close with Dolphins and super close to the tigers and lions.  They had 2 baby white tigers just born in June, but we missed them beacuse we were so fasinated by the dolphins.   We had a great vacation and Theo is still talking about the Dolphins.  I didn’t get pictures of everything but I put a few in the middle of my home page.

European Road Trip DMG Style

August 9, 2010

I was going to post a few pictures on facebook but this trip today had to many exciting pieces.  My manangement team had 6 athletes competing in Luzern Swiztlerand on Sunday all of us traveled from there to the Netherlands to the base camp.   1 went my plane, 2 went by train and 3 of us went by car.  I was priviledged to an 8 hour car ride through Europe.  The best part is we had 4 adults all with large suitcases and carry on bags in a tiny European Car.  See the pictures,dmg-roadtrip1.jpg dmg-roadtrip2.jpgdmg-roadtrip3.jpg dmg-roadtrip4.jpgNow dont think I had it good riding shot gun.  My knees were in the dashboard and in Europe there is a fire extingisher on the floor of the passenger side.  The best part is we were chauffered by DMG’s finest, Piotrek.  He did his best to try and get us here in 6 hours but the trip was over 660km.  Although Germany has a population over 80 milion, all we saw was country side the whole trip.  It was really pretty, a lot of green trees and beautiful sunshine.  At least we didn’t get lost like the time Coach Clayton was driving from Hungary to Croatia and we ended up on the wrong side of the mountain.
