Making my 3rd Olympic Team today was more exciting than ever.  I had my number ONE fan cheering me on today, as you can see in the picture.  I am truly enjoying motherhood and feel very blessed to have great support from family and friends.  After giving birth last year to my son, I wasn’t sure if a comeback was possible.  But with all of you believing in me, it gave me the will power to try.  I was super excited after finishing in 1st place today, but I was even more excited when taking the victory lap and getting High 5’s and Hugs from everyone.  It was great knowing everyone was cheering me on.

I told the media today that this possible because of the strong team of family and friends I have behind me.  So let’s keep the momentum going and start preparing for Beijing.  Visit this website for the track and field Olympic Schedule,  http://www.usatf.org/events/2008/OlympicGames/schedule.asp

Womens throwers and heptathletes look to make Olympic Team

June 20, 2008

EUGENE, Ore. - Suzy Powell-Roos, Stephanie Brown Trafton, Erin Gilreath, Amber Campbell, Kim Kreiner, Kristin Heaston and Hyleas Fountain are among the numerous athletes to highlight the competition in the women’s throwing events and heptathlon at the 2008 U.S. Olympic Team Trials - Track & Field, June 27 - July 6 at historic Hayward Field, University of Oregon in Eugene, Ore.

The top three finishers in each competition, who have met Olympic performance standards, will earn the ultimate prize of a spot on the Team USA roster for the 2008 Olympic Games in Beijing, China.

Discus Throw

American record holder and 2007 USA Outdoor champion, Suzy Powell-Roos is set to compete in her fourth Olympic Trials. Competition will be fierce, however, as she will face 2008 world leader (66.17 meters/217-1) and 2004 Olympic Trials runner-up Stephanie Brown Trafton who takes aim at making her second Olympic Team roster. Also vying for the team are 2005 USA Outdoor champion and 2007 USA Outdoor runner-up Becky Breisch, who is currently ranked second in the U.S., and 2004 Olympic Trials champion and 3-time USA Outdoor champion (’03, ‘04, ‘06) Aretha Thurmond, who is competing in her third Olympic Trials after giving birth last year.

Hammer Throw

American record holder and 2004 Olympic Trials champion Erin Gilreath looks to make her second U.S. Olympic Team. Gilreath will face tough competition from the trio of 2007 USA Outdoor champion Brittany Riley, 2007 USA Outdoor runner-up Kristal Yush, and 2005 USA Outdoor runner-up and U.S. leader (70.19m/230-3) Amber Campbell, who are all vying to make their first Olympic Team. The women’s hammer throw is a relatively young event at the U.S. Olympic Trials, as it was first contested in 2000.

Javelin Throw

American record holder, 2004 Olympic Trials champion, and 4-time USA Outdoor champion (’01, ‘04, ‘05, ‘06), Kim Kreiner looks to earn a spot on her second Olympic Team. 2007 USA Outdoor champion, Dana Pounds also will be in contention for one of the three spots on the roster. Fresh off their collegiate junior year and the 2008 NCAA Division I Championships, is the up-and-coming duo of 2008 champion Rachel Yurkovich, and U.S. leader with a toss of 61.56m/202-0, Kara Patterson, who will be competing in their first Olympic Trials.

Shot Put

Three-time USA Outdoor champion (’03, ‘05, ‘07) and 2004 Olympic Trials runner-up, Kristin Heaston looks to repeat her success and make her second Olympic Team. 2006 USA Outdoor champion and 3-time USA Indoor champion (’05, ‘06, ‘07), Jillian Camarena is in strong contention for a spot on her first Olympic Team and 2008 and 2007 NCAA Division I Outdoor champion and U.S. leader at 18.79m/61-7.75, Jessica Pressley attempts to qualify for her first Team USA roster.

Heptathlon

2-time USA Outdoor champion (’05, ‘07), Hyleas Fountain was fourth at the 2004 Olympic Trials and is the reigning U.S. champion. 4-time NCAA Division I champion (’04, ‘06, ‘07, ‘08) and U.S. leader at 6,276 points, Jacquelyn Johnson and the duo of 2007 USA Outdoor runner-up Diana Pickler and twin sister Julie Pickler all will be in pursuit for a spot on their first Olympic Team.
